CHAPTER 9

“I’d like to take you out to dinner,” Donnie said when he was standing in front of Kendra’s desk.

He’d been thinking about her since they’d been together in that hotel room. Too many times to count he’d picked up the phone to call her, only to slam it back down again. He didn’t have to beg. He’d told her that and in his heart and mind he believed those words. Yet, here he was, at her studio, asking her out on a date. Go figure.

“That’s not necessary if you want a consultation. Besides, you’ve been my client for a while now. You can just call me and tell me what you want.”

She looked impeccable dressed in a winter white pantsuit and pale pink blouse. Her hair was up today in some fancy way that made her features look softer, even more alluring.

“But if I want to feed you then I have to ask,” he said sliding one hand in his pocket.

She sat back in her chair and stared at him for a few silent seconds. “What are you trying to do?”

“I’m trying to ask you out on a date, but you’re not making it easy.”

She began shaking her head. “You can’t ask someone out if you’re married.”

“Okay, let’s get this straight right now. My wife and I do not have a relationship. We haven’t for some time now. I’ve actually already started divorce proceedings. So, you see, there’s no harm in your having dinner with me.”

“Oh there’s a whole lot of harm in going out with you Donnie Renard,” she said with a chuckle. “Look, I know it seems old-fashioned, but I was brought up in a very religious family. Marriage is held in high regarded in my family and I just can’t disrespect it.”

“I understand,” Donnie said but he wasn’t sure he really did. In his world people did whatever they wanted with whomever they wanted. A ring on the left hand and a marriage certificate didn’t mean a damn thing. All was fair in love and basketball. But this woman was telling him differently. He was intrigued by that fact alone.

“I’ll make a deal with you,” he offered, coming around to the side of the desk.

She watched him with a hint of leeriness in her eyes and he made himself stop and keep his hands to himself. It wasn’t easy, but something told him in the end it would be worth it.

Folding her arms over her chest only made her breasts look more enticing. Donnie swallowed deeply.

“What kind of deal?” she asked.

“If you agree to have dinner with me, I’ll agree to an outing of your choice. During which times we will both keep our hands to ourselves. It’ll be totally innocent. Agreed?”

Her deep brown eyes moved slowly over him. She bit her bottom lip and he knew she was at least contemplating his proposal.

“You’ll go wherever I want to go?”

Donnie readily nodded. “Wherever you want to go.”

A smile began to spread across her face and Donnie felt an unfamiliar shifting in his chest.
